I got a message from Susan this morning asking me if my Worthy Stuff column (or is this an article? Essay? Just musings?) was coming out today. Woops! Sorry to be the flakey one of the ALSSI team! The worst part about forgetting to send this to your in box first things this morning was that I actually had been keeping a running list of some favorite stuff on my phone. So here are the memories I have been collecting for the last little while.
It would appear that summer is over and for the first ever I am not sad…yet. I am sure that grief will hit but so far the cooler days feel awesome. Perhaps it’s because this has been one of hottest summers on record for Utah. It also probably didn’t help that I have spent a lot of time in extra-flaming-hot St. George, but like Susan, even (especially?) flaming-hot deserts have their sacredness.
“If the desert is holy, it is because it is a forgotten place that allows us to remember the sacred. Perhaps that is why every pilgrimage to the desert is a pilgrimage to the self. There is no place to hide and so we are found.”
—Terry Tempest Williams, Red: Passion & Patience in the Desert
