January Worthy Stuff

Happy New Year! I think…
“Yes, we are capable of change. But let’s take ourselves off the hook for being GOOD, BETTER, BEST. Perhaps today, it is enough to love and dream and hope and nap and search for beauty and truth and try again tomorrow.”
—Kate Bowler
Instead of Happy New Year, perhaps I should say, “Meh, new year!” Because nothing good ever seems to happen in January, except my birthday. :) It’s dark. It’s cold. Everybody is out of money thanks to the holidays. People blather on about goals, that thankfully, we will never have to hear about again come February. I know it doesn’t sound like it, but really, I am trying to be less cranky about the Here and the Now that is January in America. I’ll share a few things that have been getting me by in the last month.
First off—Maui! As a kid, my first time on a plane didn’t happen until I was 17. So I know how enormously lucky I am to have the means to travel now. While in Maui I recorded a 12-minute audio of blissful beach waves. I now use that audio recording as a meditation. It makes me smile to remember (and hear) the waves and the tropical birds. From now on I am repeating this wherever I spend yummy time that is calming. Beaches, birdsong in April, rainforests, whatever. I want a plethora of my own calming sounds for meditating.
