As members of the body of Christ, we are called to join Jesus in atoning—to take on the shape of one another’s pain. It’s a call to brave and unreserved love, a message central to the book, “Queer Mormon Theology: An Introduction.” In this episode, author/philosopher Blaire Ostler joins Cynthia and Susan for a discussion of everything from the atonement to eternity, with plenty of conversational side-trips along the way. Can queerness and Mormon-ness coexist? In her beautiful theological framing, Blaire shows us they not only can, they naturally do.

My vision of the atonement will forever be expanded having read her book. I look forward to hearing the “Queer in Christ” section read in Priesthood Meeting and/or Sunday School. And that last quote in the podcast caused me some real discomfort when reading the book. I have disagreed with Church Leadership for so long going back to the ERA, Blacks and the Priesthood and civil rights, Women and the Church/temple, Prop 8… that I eventually stopped sustaining them as Prophets, Seers and Revelators in Temple Recommend interviews when the Exclusion Policy was inacted. I just honestly couldn’t do it anymore. But this quote in the book prompted me that I should love them. A book on Queer Mormon Theology has me pondering about how to bravely and unconditionally love Church Leadership again. Your podcast really honed in the parts of the book that resonated with me. Thanks.
